Abstract

In the competitive research publication atmosphere, identifying a research gap (RG) is crucial for research article introductions across all fields. A research article (RA) submitted to a reputable journal may face rejection if the authors fail to highlight the 'niche' by reviewing previous relevant studies to justify their research project. This study aims to investigate how authors in the field of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), published in SINTA 1 journals, address the novelty in their article introductions. Sixty articles from three TEFL journals were selected for the SINTA 1. A qualitative content analysis approach was employed for data collection and analysis, utilizing the five RG strategies proposed by Arianto et al. (2021) as the analytical model. The findings indicate that among the five RG strategies, Strategy 3 (stating limitations in previous research) is the most frequently used by writers. The analysis of samples from three journals reveals that all samples employed various rhetorical strategies. To enhance the quality of article introductions, writers, particularly novices, should incorporate multiple strategies with appropriate rhetorical features.
