Abstract

Learning English in an English-medium learning environment requires students to understand academic content while simultaneously using English for communication and academic activities. However, students may face various linguistic and pedagogical challenges during the learning process. This study aimed to identify the linguistic challenges faced by English Education students in learning English in the International Program of English Education (IPEE) and to examine the pedagogical challenges related to teaching methods and instructional materials. This study employed a descriptive qualitative design. The participants were eight English Education students enrolled in the International Program of English Education (IPEE) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Bengkulu. Data were collected through a 20-item closed-ended questionnaire developed by the researcher based on the theoretical framework of linguistic and pedagogical challenges, and semi-structured interviews. The questionnaire covered linguistic aspects, including vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as pedagogical aspects, including teaching methods and instructional materials. The findings showed that students experienced challenges in both linguistic and pedagogical areas. Speaking skills and vocabulary mastery emerged as the most prominent linguistic challenges, followed by difficulties in grammar, listening, reading, and writing. Students particularly experienced difficulties in expressing ideas spontaneously, understanding unfamiliar academic vocabulary, maintaining grammatical accuracy, understanding different accents and fast speech, and comprehending complex academic texts. Pedagogically, students faced challenges related to teaching methods, learning materials, teaching pace, and classroom participation. Interactive and student-centered activities were perceived as helpful, while fast-paced instruction and complex academic materials, particularly journal articles, increased students’ difficulties. Therefore, linguistic and pedagogical challenges are closely interconnected, and appropriate teaching methods, adequate learning support, and suitable instructional materials are needed to help students manage the demands of learning English in an English-medium academic environment.
