Abstract

This study aims to analyze the argumentative strategies used in the discussion section of journal articles published by Muhammadiyah and 'Aisyiyah Universities in Indonesia. This study is important because the discussion section is a scientific space that requires authors to convey their findings through logical and reflective reasoning. The issues addressed in this study include the types of argumentative strategies employed by authors and how these strategies are applied based on the Toulmin model. The data consists of quotations from the discussion sections of journal articles that contain elements of argumentative strategies. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected from 61 SINTA 2–indexed journal articles published by Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD), and Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo (UMSIDA). Data were gathered through document analysis, using a checklist to identify Toulmin model components Claim, Grounds, Warrant, Backing, Qualifier, and Rebuttal. The results indicate that Claim, Grounds, and Backing appeared in all articles (100%), while Warrant, Qualifier, and Rebuttal were applied inconsistently. In total, 33 articles (54%) demonstrated a complete set of argumentative components.
