Abstract
This study aims to explore and analyze the traditions and local wisdom of Matah Mare in Pasar Lama Village, Kaur Selatan District, Kaur Regency, using qualitative research methods supported by data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using Robert K. Merton's Functional Theory. The results show the community's role in the Matah Mare tradition, a practice in Pasar Lama Village by the Serawai ethnic group residing in Kaur Selatan District, Kaur Regency, Bengkulu Province. This tradition involves opening the water gates and directing the flow to the sea. The purpose of the Matah Mare tradition is to alleviate poverty during the lean season, as the estuary is abundant with fish. The Matah Mare tradition embodies social values, including mutual cooperation, sharing wealth with others, harmony, respecting others, and responsibility. The functions of the Matah Mare tradition in Pasar Lama Village, Kaur Selatan District, Kaur Regency, are as follows: social values such as mutual cooperation, sharing with others, harmony, respect for others, and responsibility. Additionally, to analyze the manifest and latent functions, the manifest functions include directing water to the estuary to prevent flooding during the rainy season, mutual cooperation, and opening water flow during the lean season to facilitate fish harvesting. The latent functions include the tradition being forgotten, coastal erosion, and changes in the condition of the estuary.
