Abstract
Fingki Akbar, 2026. “Analysis on Students’ Perceptions in Using Duolingo for Speaking Skill in 7th Semester of English Education Study Program at Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu.” Thesis, English Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Teaching Training and Education, Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. Supervisor: Washlurachim Safitri, M.Pd. Speaking skill is an important component of English language learning because it enables students to communicate ideas, opinions, and information effectively. However, students often face difficulties in speaking due to limited vocabulary, lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, and limited opportunities for oral practice. This study aimed to analyze students’ perceptions of using Duolingo for speaking skills and to identify its advantages and limitations. This study employed a descriptive qualitative design. The data were collected through a 40-item questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The questionnaire was administered to 15 seventh-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu and covered eight indicators: motivation, engagement, confidence, learning experience, learning design, learning environment, technology features, and accessibility. The findings showed that students generally had positive perceptions of using Duolingo for speaking development. Duolingo was perceived to support pronunciation, vocabulary, basic speaking fluency, confidence, motivation, and independent practice. However, its limitations included limited opportunities for authentic two-way communication, expressing personal opinions, detailed pronunciation feedback, and spontaneous communication. Therefore, Duolingo can be used as a supplementary tool for speaking development, but it should be combined with direct communicative activities to support students’ overall speaking competence.
