Abstract

This study aims to determine the survival strategies of clothing traders in the modern traditional markets of Bengkulu City in the face of the onslaught of online stores. The research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. Research informants were determined through purposive sampling (sample selection with specific considerations). Data was collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data was then analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research findings show that clothing traders in the modern traditional markets of Bengkulu City implement various survival strategies amidst the onslaught of online stores, such as selling in other locations, marketing through social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp, selling other products, maintaining good relationships with customers, and reducing prices lower than before. The analysis of the research results was conducted using Max Weber's action theory, which focuses on the actions or strategies taken by clothing traders in the modern traditional markets of Bengkulu City to remain resilient amidst the onslaught of online stores. This research is relevant to action theory, which understands that social actions do not occur spontaneously but are intentionally formed by individuals in a context that they have given meaning to. According to action theory in the context of facing competition from online stores, it shows how people understand the situation they face and choose what to do based on their understanding of that situation. Thus, clothing traders in the modern traditional markets of Bengkulu City choose to take certain actions consciously, aware of the goals they want to achieve and the situation they are facing.
