Abstract
This study aims to analyze cultural communication in the Kayah Baarak tradition in Tunggang Village, Pondok Suguh District, Mukomuko Regency, Bengkulu Province. The tradition of Kayah Baarak, which means "parade bath", is a sacred ritual in a series of traditional wedding ceremonies that are passed down from generation to generation. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with purposive sampling techniques to determine five informants consisting of traditional leaders, traditional actors, local cultural experts, the younger generation, and villagers. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed with Dell Hymes' communication ethnographic theory using the SPEAKING model. The results of the study show that cultural communication in the Kayah Baarak tradition is reflected through traditional symbols, spoken language, gestures, and procession sequences that have a collective meaning for the community. Each element in the SPEAKING model starting from the setting, participants, objectives, order of speech, tone, means, norms, to genres is integrated in the implementation of traditions, thus forming a unique communication system. In line with the ethnographic theory of communication, it can be formulated in three main premises: Communication Situation, Kayah Baarak takes place in a sacred atmosphere with a specific time and place setting that strengthens the meaning of customs and religious; Communicative Events, traditional processions that involve the entire community as a form of solidarity, respect for ancestors, and strengthening the value of togetherness; Prayers, rhymes, songs, and symbolic actions such as the use of traditional clothes and offerings are concrete forms of conveying cultural messages. This tradition not only serves as a means of conveying moral messages and respect for ancestors, but also as a medium of character education based on local values. However, the research also found challenges in the form of declining understanding of the young generation's understanding of the symbolic meaning of tradition due to the influence of modernization. This research emphasizes that the preservation of the Kayah Baarak tradition requires strengthening cultural literacy through formal and informal education, systematic documentation, and local government policy support based on community participation. Thus, this tradition can still become a living and relevant intangible cultural heritage in the midst of social change
