Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of using social media specifically Instagram on students’ English writing skills and how Instagram can be optimized as a learning medium. The subjects of this study were 11th-grade students of SMA Negeri 04 Bengkulu City, consisting of 12 classes with 36 students in each class, totaling 432 students. The sample was determined using the Lemeshow formula with a maximum estimated proportion of 50% and a margin of error of 10%, resulting in 96 students, with 8 students selected from each class. This research is limited to the use of Instagram as the only social media platform analyzed, due to its relevant features such as caption writing and visual interaction that support the development of English writing skills. Other platforms like Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, or WhatsApp are excluded from this study. The study applied a mixedmethods approach, with data collected through observation, questionnaires, interviews, and students’ writing analysis. The results show that the use of Instagram has a positive impact on students' writing skills, including grammar, vocabulary, idea coherence, and writing motivation. With proper instructional strategies and teacher guidance, Instagram can be optimized as an effective, contextual, and engaging learning tool for enhancing students’ English writing proficiency
